Visiting relatives, shopping, and getting our homes ready for visitors takes up so much of our time that we may neglect our homes and automobiles. As we slide into the cold winter period, we often forget that these two areas also need attention or we could find ourselves invoiced with big problems which according to Murphy’s Law will naturally come out at the most inopportune time.
Your automobile needs a coolant check to be sure it can withstand the cold weather and you certainly should check its tires to be sure they still have enough tread to properly grip the road during icy conditions. It is also recommended that you carry a flashlight with fresh batteries, a blanket, and jumper cables. All of these items and procedures could come in very handy in the event you are stranded during a storm.
Your home can also suffer during cold weather. It is always recommended that you have a full checkup on your heating and cooling systems. You should be sure all exposed pipes are covered and sprinkler systems drained. Most people heed the freeze warning from the television weather people and cover their plants. When rain turns to ice and the walk to the front door becomes unsafe, be sure to think about your guests and put sand over the ice or a non-slip mat. Accidents can occur in a split second and ruin everyone’s holiday. This is also a time when families put up their Christmas tree and put gifts on display.
Thieves know at this time of year they will likely be successful because people’s cars as well as homes contain valuable gifts. You should try to always put shopping packages in the trunk of your car and be careful of what can be viewed in your home from outside. It is also a good idea to breakdown boxes and place them in the trash so newly purchased items are not available for criminals to see.
