Spending an afternoon on the water isn’t the same as setting sail for a month. But regardless of your trip’s length, you should always keep certain items on your boat for safety purposes. Some of these items are as follows.
1. Lifejackets: Plainly stated, lifejackets save lives. Ensure that there is an appropriately sized lifejacket for everyone on board. An extra comes in handy when a friend joins you on your boat or a fellow boaters asks to borrow one for the day.
2. Anchor: If you plan on docking, lose motor power or experience an emergency, an anchor can come in handy. It will prevent your boat from being pulled downstream or smashing into rocks along the shoreline.
3. Rope: You’ll need rope to tie up to docks or tress, for towing and a variety of odd jobs on the boat itself, such as tying down equipment.
4. Multi-tool: The useful tool can be used for all sorts of small repairs around your vessel. As a bonus, keep cable ties and duct tape handy to assist with repairs.
5. First aid kit: This should contain essential items, such as bandages, sterile gauze, antibacterial ointment, alcohol cleaning pads etc. Be sure that at least one person on board knows how to treat minor wounds.
6. Whistle or air horn: These items can be used to signal distress in the dark. The sound alerts nearby boaters that someone needs helps and informs them of your location.
7. Flashlight: Apart from being a handy tool to have in the dark, a flashlight can also be used to signal distress. Learning Morse code may even come in handy.
8. Bucket: In case any water finds its way into your boat, you can use a bucket to scoop it back out. Not to mention, buckets are great for storage.
9. Blanket: Wrapping up in a cozy blanket is great when your clothes get wet on those cooler nights. While hypothermia probably isn’t a realistic risk in the summertime, better safe than sorry.
10. Cell phone and/or radio: It’s a good idea to have a method of communication for contacting both friends and the marina staff, whether casually or in case of emergency.
